Why you might fail with a direct selling company

Hello friends!

Hope you are all doing well today. I'm sipping a coffee and thinking about some of my colleagues, so I thought I'd write a post about something that's been on my mind lately.

Frustration.

Yep. That's it. Pure frustration.  I've been checking out some posts on a Facebook group set up for my primary company and I read some comments where people were expressing frustration at not having the success they initially anticipated when they signed up.

I get this. Network marketing is a tough business, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

In my debut post on this blog I mentioned that a great deal of new network marketers either get frustrated and quit or spend themselves out of business within their first year.  Ya, it's a pretty common thing.

But the question is why?

Well, here in a nutshell are a few reasons why I think you might struggle in the business.... And before I start, these are not  the only reasons, these are just the ones that popped into my head first.  And if you read this and think to yourself, "yeah, I've been there, I've done that," don't worry.  Most of us have and most of us will.  The key to success is not avoiding making mistakes or failing at something.  It's from learning from those mistakes and growing with our experiences.

Here goes....

1) You forget it's a JOB!  Yes, it can be a lucrative business but the ones who truly succeed at it put in a great deal of time into what they do.  They realize that no, they haven't won the lottery, and are working long irregular hours to achieve their goals. You, on the other hand, post on your Facebook profile page that you're in business, and then sit back and wait for the mail man to arrive with your first ten thousand dollar check.

2) You try to DO IT ALL!  Yes, you're going to blog, write newsletters, master Facebook, hit every craft sale in a 100 mile radius, have 20 "informational" parties" per week, and generally save the world, one sale at a time. Not only do you burn yourself out, you don't really accomplish much of what you set out to do.

3) You stalk your friends and family to the point of obsession. You start out following the plan, telling people about your opportunity, but eventually get so aggressive with your pitch and your habit of constantly talking about what a GREAT product this is, that people start avoiding you and stop returning your calls and emails.

4) You focus on how great the product is, rather than helping people solve problems.  You constantly tell people that they need to buy your product, but forget that you're in the business to help people.  It's more about the product and less about you.

5) You expect to make a ton of money with little to no marketing education or experience.  You jump into your business opportunity head first, and forget to listen to the advice of others, read marketing books, sign up for free webinars, and subscribe to newsletters.  You try to do it all on your own.

6) You get frustrated and quit after stumbling a few times.  You get extremely discouraged when you haven't received your $25 000.00 check in the mail after three months in the business, so you blame it on the company and convince yourself that you will never succeed.  You tell yourself that it was a stupid idea in the first place.

7) You're too scared to try anything new.  You get so comfortable with your one way of doing business that your hands sweat at the mere thought of attending a meet up group or sharing your personal thoughts in a blog.  You get stuck in a rut. You miss the call to action.

So these are a few reasons why people struggle.  And if this is you, do not despair.  Going on a journey like this is about personal growth as much as the bottom line.  The best thing that you can do for yourself is build up the courage to jump out of your comfort zone and try new things.  Start educating yourself.  Make those mistakes--heck, make lots of them.  Make them, and then learn from them.
